I recently discovered natural dying with food scraps. Avocado, Onion, Cabbage, Black Beans, Coffee, Black Tea are a few well known dyes. I used yellow onion skins that I had saved overtime and boiled them in water. The skins quickly produced a vibrant yellow/orange color.

Some of first steps of natural dyeing are scouring and mordanting. Scouring removes oils and cleans the fabric. The mordant helps the dye bond to the fibers. Below are scoured and Alum mordanted yardage and clothing waiting to be dipped in the dye pot.
