Bær Art Center Residency

Summer 2021

This August I traveled to Iceland for my first artist residency at Bær Art Center. During my two week stay I focused on creating photographs using silver gelatin coated glass plates.

The residency is located on the NorthWestern region of Iceland on the east side of Skagafjörður, a fjord that faces the Arctic Circle. Along the coast were hundreds of basalt columns where Arctic Terns called out to one another as I would walk along the edge of the dandelion covered cliffs.

Nearby the residency was an old Hákarl hut where some Icelandic people are known to bury Greenland shark underground in order to ferment it overtime. Inside the structure there are rusted nails where the shark would hang to dry after it was unearthed.

Icelandic horses lived on the property and they would eagerly greet me, curiously sniffing my hand with their warm breath.

It was a privilege to have made this trip during these strange times and I’m eternally grateful to Bær Art Center for the wonderful opportunity that I will never forget.
